Day of the Night Heron — March 26, 2013
This is Day of the Night Heron. I never know what I will find down at the waterhole, which is what makes this project so much fun. Today all the regulars were missing–no Little Blue Heron, no Snowy Egret, no Great Blue Heron, and no Osprey in sight.
Instead, the Yellow Crown Night Herons were back–two of them this time. One was quietly tucked away in the weeds, the other patrolling the bulkhead. These night herons are new on the scene, having only shown up about a week or so ago. This is only their third appearance. I enjoyed snooping on them – it was a treat.
It occurs to me that life is a lot like a visit to the watering hole. We never know what the day will bring. We should enter into it, though, with a sense of anticipation and wonder for what awaits us. Each day offers a golden nugget, if not a handful of them, but we must be open and alert to recognize and receive. And it’s true, some days we may have to look a little harder, dig a little deeper to find it, but the gift is there. That’s what makes life fun. It’s full of surprises.
