Celebrate the Buzz–June 25, 2013

Salute to the humble bumblebee! These amazing creatures go about their business buzzing flower after flower, spreading pollen and joy. It’s estimated that bees are responsible for pollinating 80% of the flowering crops which translates into roughly one third of the food we eat. And “busy as a bee” is rooted in truth. It is said bees may visit 50 to 1,000 flowers in a single outing, with outings lasting from 30 minutes to four hours. Honor the bee. We are much indebted to these work horses.

One of the things I love most about exploring is that you never know what you will find. It’s all a matter of luck–being at the right place at the right time. That’s how I felt today, lucky–when I stumbled upon this incredulous pose by a great blue heron. A big bird in its own right, the heron claimed the top spot on the tallest “stump” on the peninsular. Towering far above it all, he looked like an ornamental weather vane.

Green Thought: Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain. – Henry David Thoreau
