Have you ever known someone for a long time, and then one day you discover something about them that you never knew? And it blows you away? It happened to me today with the Mallards. Somehow, despite seeing these ducks all the time and photographing them for nearly a year, I missed the fact that they have a white-bordered, blue wing patch. But there it is–big as day. When I first saw the patch, I searching through field guides trying to identify this “new” bird–only to discover it was an old friend. I don’t know what is more amazing–Nature’s clever creativity placing such a colorful “label” on the bird, or my failure to notice?
Today, I have a whole, new respect for the Mallards.
